Bembridge Coast Hotel History

History of Bembridge Coast

In 1545 Bembridge was razed to the ground by a marauding French fleet under the flag of Seigneur de Taix. The reason for picking on the innocent village was not to make off with an unfair share of Isle of Wight garlic (that came later) but to prod the English fleet, holed up in Portsmouth with a fine view of the flames, into response.

The Tudor navy saw through the ploy and stayed put. Only Henry VIII’s prized Mary Rose was tempted… and was promptly sunk for its trouble. As for the French admiral, on calculating that 6,000 hands would be needed to garrison the Isle of Wight over the approaching winter, he retreated to the high seas.
